Exam Pattern

1. Preliminary examination:
100 objective questions, 200 marks, 2 hours, on general knowledge and current affairs; minimum 30 per cent
2. Mains Paper 1 (General Hindi):
100 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours; qualifying only, minimum 30 per cent; marks not counted for merit
3. Mains Paper 2 (General studies):
100 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours; general studies, general science, civics, Indian history, Indian geography, mathematics and mental ability
4. Physical test - run:
Men of all categories: 1 mile (1.6 km) within 6 minutes 30 seconds. Women of all categories: 1 kilometre within 6 minutes
5. Physical test - high jump:
Men minimum 4 feet; women minimum 3 feet
6. Physical test - long jump:
Men minimum 12 feet; women minimum 9 feet
7. Physical test - shot put:
Men: 16 pound shot, minimum 16 feet. Women: 12 pound shot, minimum 10 feet
8. Attempts:
Three attempts are allowed for the high jump, the long jump and the shot put. A candidate who completes the run within the set time but fails to meet the minimum standard in the jumps or the shot put is declared unsuccessful and is not given a chance in the remaining events

Selection Process

1. Stage 1 - Preliminary examination:
One paper of 200 marks with 100 questions in 2 hours on general knowledge and current affairs. Candidates scoring below 30 per cent are declared unsuccessful for the mains. Twenty times the number of vacancies are selected category-wise on merit for the mains
2. Stage 2 - Mains written examination, Paper 1:
General Hindi, 200 marks with 100 questions in 2 hours. A minimum of 30 per cent is compulsory, failing which the candidate is declared ineligible; the marks are not counted towards merit
3. Stage 2 - Mains written examination, Paper 2:
General studies, general science, civics, Indian history, Indian geography, mathematics and mental ability, 200 marks with 100 questions in 2 hours
4. Negative marking:
0.2 marks are deducted for every wrong answer in both stages
5. Stage 3 - Physical fitness and efficiency test:
Six times the number of vacancies are called category-wise on merit from the mains. Only a pass is required; no marks are given
6. Merit list:
Prepared category-wise from the marks of the mains written examination. Ties are broken by date of birth (older first), then by higher educational qualification, then by the English alphabetical order of the name on the 10th board certificate
7. Minimum qualifying marks for the final merit list:
32 per cent for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and women candidates; 34 per cent for the Extremely Backward Class; 36.5 per cent for the Backward Class; and 40 per cent for the general category
8. Normalisation:
Where the examination is held in more than one shift, normalised marks are computed by the equi-percentile method

Admit Card Details

1. Admit card:
Admit cards for the written examination are issued online to candidates with a valid application by the closing date; information is given through newspapers and the Commission's website, and by SMS and e-mail

Reservation Details

1. Women:
35 per cent horizontal reservation in every reservation category, on the 97 per cent of posts left after the 3 per cent reserved for women of the Backward Classes; admissible only to women who are original residents of Bihar. Women may also be appointed on merit over and above the 35 per cent
2. Grandchildren of freedom fighters:
2 per cent horizontal reservation - 01 post - for the grandchildren of freedom fighters of Bihar whose pension is sanctioned by the central government
3. Economically Weaker Section:
Certificate must be based on income and assets of financial year 2025-2026; for a married, divorced or deserted woman it is valid only if issued on the basis of General Administration Department letter no. 5622 dated 24.03.2026
4. Third gender:
Kinnar, Kothi, Hijra and transgender persons receive the benefit of Backward Class reservation; gender is determined by the identity certificate issued by the District Magistrate
5. Domicile:
Every kind of reservation, including the 35 per cent for women, is available only to original residents of Bihar; candidates in a reserved category of another state must apply as unreserved, failing which they are held ineligible

Important Instructions

1. Medical examination and character verification:
All selected candidates undergo a medical examination and verification of character and antecedents by the appointing authority before appointment; an adverse report or concealment of facts makes the candidate ineligible
2. Pregnancy:
A married woman found pregnant at the medical examination is not permitted to take the run and physical efficiency test and is declared ineligible on that ground; married women candidates must submit a declaration of non-pregnancy
