How to Apply

1. Mode:
Online only, through the link for Advertisement No. 05/2026 on the 'Home Guard' tab of the Commission's website https://bpssc.bihar.gov.in.
2. Part 1 - registration:
Name, nationality, mobile number, e-mail address, Bihar domicile, reservation category, gender and date of birth are entered, and the fee is paid. A registration number and password are then sent by SMS and e-mail. Details may be edited before payment only.
3. Part 2 - application form:
After logging in with the registration number and password, the father's or husband's name, mother's name, address and educational qualifications are entered and the declaration accepted; a colour photograph taken within the last two months on a white background (15 to 25 KB, .jpg/.jpeg/.gif) and separate signatures in English and Hindi in black or blue ink on a white background (each 15 to 25 KB) are uploaded.
4. Acknowledgement:
The printed application need not be sent to the Commission, but the registration number is needed for future correspondence; candidates must print the acknowledgement on A4 paper and keep it, attaching a copy when corresponding with the Commission.
5. Cancellation:
A wrongly filled application may be cancelled and filled afresh, but the fee already paid is not refunded and a fresh fee must be paid.

Exam Pattern

1. Standard:
Class 10 (Matric) of the Bihar School Examination Board or equivalent.
2. Subjects:
1. Hindi, 2. English, 3. Mathematics, 4. Social Science (History, Geography, Civics, Economics), 5. Science (Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany), 6. General Knowledge and Current Affairs. All questions are objective.
3. Paper:
One paper of two hours with 100 questions carrying 1 mark each; the written examination is of 100 marks.
4. Multiple shifts and normalisation:
Depending on the number of applications the examination may be held in more than one shift. For multi-shift or multi-question-paper examinations, normalised marks are computed by the equi-percentile method.
5. OMR answer sheet:
The OMR answer sheet is made in two copies, one of which is an invisible carbon copy retained by the Commission for one year after the final selection list is published.
6. Qualifying marks:
Below 30 per cent the candidate is declared unsuccessful for the physical efficiency test.
7. Physical efficiency test - race (maximum 50 marks):
Men of all categories 1 mile (1.6 km) in a maximum of 6 minutes: under 5 minutes 50 marks; 5 minutes to 5 minutes 20 seconds 40 marks; over 5 minutes 20 seconds up to 5 minutes 40 seconds 30 marks; over 5 minutes 40 seconds up to 6 minutes 20 marks; over 6 minutes fails. Women of all categories 1 kilometre in a maximum of 5 minutes: under 4 minutes 50 marks; 4 minutes to 4 minutes 20 seconds 40 marks; over 4 minutes 20 seconds up to 4 minutes 40 seconds 30 marks; over 4 minutes 40 seconds up to 5 minutes 20 marks; over 5 minutes fails.
8. Physical efficiency test - shot put (maximum 25 marks):
Men of all categories throw a 16-pound shot a minimum of 16 feet: 16 to 17 feet 9 marks; over 17 up to 18 feet 13 marks; over 18 up to 19 feet 17 marks; over 19 up to 20 feet 21 marks; over 20 feet 25 marks; under 16 feet fails. Women of all categories throw a 12-pound shot a minimum of 12 feet: 12 to 13 feet 9 marks; over 13 up to 14 feet 13 marks; over 14 up to 15 feet 17 marks; over 15 up to 16 feet 21 marks; over 16 feet 25 marks; under 12 feet fails.
9. Physical efficiency test - high jump (maximum 25 marks):
Men of all categories, minimum 4 feet: 4 feet 13 marks; 4 feet 4 inches 17 marks; 4 feet 8 inches 21 marks; 5 feet 25 marks; under 4 feet fails. Women of all categories, minimum 3 feet: 3 feet 13 marks; 3 feet 4 inches 17 marks; 3 feet 8 inches 21 marks; 4 feet 25 marks; under 3 feet fails.
10. Attempts:
Candidates must qualify separately in every event. Three attempts are allowed in the shot put and the high jump only; a candidate who completes the race within the prescribed time but fails to meet the minimum standard in the shot put or the high jump is declared unsuccessful and is given no opportunity in the remaining events.

Admit Card Details

1. Download:
The physical efficiency test admit card will be available from 10.09.2026 on the 'Home Guard' tab of https://bpssc.bihar.gov.in, from which candidates may download their e-admit card.
2. Duplicate:
Candidates who for any reason cannot download the e-admit card may attend the Commission's office at 5, Hardinge Road, Patna - 800001 on 15.09.2026 between 10:00 and 17:00 with a photocopy of the acknowledgement of their application and a valid photo identity card, and obtain a duplicate admit card at their own cost.
3. At the test:
Candidates must present themselves at the appointed time with the admit card and a photocopy of the online application acknowledgement, together with the listed original documents and one set of photocopies.

Reservation Details

1. Horizontal reservation for women:
35 per cent of the posts in every reservation category, keeping intact the 3 per cent reservation for women of the Backward Classes. Under General Administration Department resolution memo no. 12575 dated 09.07.2025 the 35 per cent horizontal reservation is available only to women who are original residents of the State of Bihar. Women may also be appointed on merit over and above the 35 per cent, under section 4(3) of Bihar Act 3 of 1992.
2. Grandchildren of freedom fighters:
2 per cent horizontal reservation under General Administration Department resolution no. 13185 dated 03.09.2015 - 2 posts. A selected candidate is counted in the reserved or unreserved category to which he or she belongs.
3. Economically Weaker Section:
The Bihar Reservation of Vacancies in Posts and Services (for Economically Weaker Sections) Act, 2019 applies; the income and asset certificate must be made on the basis of financial year 2025-2026. For a married, divorced or deserted woman of the Economically Weaker Section, the certificate is valid only if issued on the basis of General Administration Department letter no. 5622 dated 24.03.2026.
4. Third-gender candidates:
Kinnar/kothi/hijra/transgender persons are included at serial 47 of the Backward Classes list (Schedule 2) of the Reservation Act, 1991 and receive the benefit of Backward Class reservation, under General Administration Department resolution no. 12722 dated 12.09.2014. Gender is determined by the identity card issued by the District Magistrate under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Rules, 2020.
5. Statutory basis:
The Bihar Reservation of Vacancies in Posts and Services (for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes) Act, 1991 (Bihar Act 3 of 1992), as amended from time to time. Reservation is available only to original residents of Bihar.

Document Requirements

1. Photo identity:
A valid photo identity card such as a voter identity card, driving licence or Aadhaar card.
2. Educational qualification:
The certificate of having passed the Intermediate or an equivalent examination.
3. Date of birth:
Proof of date of birth - the original matriculation certificate.
4. Caste certificate:
Issued by the competent authority, for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Extremely Backward Class and Backward Class candidates. For women candidates, married or unmarried, the caste certificate is valid only if issued on the basis of the father.
5. Non-creamy-layer certificate:
For Backward Class and Extremely Backward Class candidates. For women candidates, married or unmarried, it is valid only if issued on the basis of the father.
6. Permanent residence certificate:
Of the State of Bihar, for candidates of all reserved categories.
7. Economically Weaker Section certificate:
For members of the Economically Weaker Section of Bihar, if applicable - a certificate made on the basis of income and assets of financial year 2024-2025, in the form prescribed by General Administration Department, Government of Bihar, notification no. 2622 dated 26 February 2019 (Gazette no. 284).
8. Grandchildren of freedom fighters:
The original certificate, if applicable, in the form prescribed by General Administration Department, Government of Bihar, letter no. 11687/Sa.Pra. dated 30.08.2016.
9. Bihar Government servants:
A certificate issued by the controlling officer, if applicable, for those serving Government servants of Bihar who have completed at least three years of regular service by the cut-off date stated in the advertisement.
10. Ex-servicemen:
The Pension Payment Order (PPO) and the discharge book are compulsory.
11. Third-gender candidates:
A certificate of being an original resident of the State of Bihar, and the certificate issued by the competent authority prescribed by the State Government establishing that the candidate is transgender.

Important Instructions

1. Compulsory attendance:
Every candidate must attend the physical efficiency test on the appointed date, and successful candidates must undergo record verification; otherwise they are treated as ineligible and are given no second opportunity. A request for extension of time will not be accepted in any circumstance.
2. Conditions of the advertisement:
At every stage of the competitive examination candidates must fully comply with all the conditions and provisions of Advertisement No. 05/2026.
