Exam Pattern

1. Preliminary examination:
100 objective questions, 200 marks, 2 hours; English, general knowledge, Hindi language knowledge, logical ability and current affairs; +2 per correct answer; minimum 30 per cent
2. Mains Paper 1 - objective:
200 questions, 200 marks, 3 hours; +1 per correct answer, -0.25 per wrong answer. General studies and current affairs 50 marks, mathematics and quantitative aptitude 40 marks, reasoning and analytical ability 40 marks, English language 20 marks, Hindi language 20 marks and general knowledge of Bihar 30 marks
3. Mains Paper 2 - descriptive:
50 marks, 1 hour; Hindi essay 15 marks, English essay 15 marks, English precis 10 marks and Hindi to English translation 10 marks

Selection Process

1. Stage 1 - Preliminary examination:
One objective multiple-choice paper of 200 marks with 100 questions in 2 hours, 02 marks for each correct answer, covering English, general knowledge, knowledge of the Hindi language, logical ability and current affairs. A candidate scoring below 30 per cent is not considered for the mains. Up to ten times the vacancies are selected category-wise on merit for the mains; the ratio may be reduced uniformly across categories if enough qualified candidates are not available
2. Stage 2 - Mains written examination, Paper 1:
Objective multiple-choice, 200 marks with 200 questions in 180 minutes (3 hours), 01 mark for each correct answer and 0.25 marks deducted for each wrong one
3. Stage 2 - Mains written examination, Paper 2:
Descriptive subjective paper of 50 marks in 60 minutes (1 hour)
4. Minimum marks in the mains:
At least 30 per cent must be scored in both papers
5. Stage 3 - Physical efficiency test:
Three times the vacancies are selected category-wise on merit from the written examination. Height, chest and weight are checked against the standards set out in clause 4.5 of the advertisement. Candidates not meeting the standards are held unsuccessful; no marks are prescribed for the physical standards
6. Merit list:
Prepared category-wise from the marks of the mains written examination. Ties are broken by date of birth (older first), then by higher educational qualification, then by the Hindi alphabetical order of the name on the 10th board certificate
7. Answer sheet:
The answer sheet of the first mains paper is in two copies, one kept by the Commission and one given to the candidate
8. Normalisation:
Where the examination is held in more than one shift, normalised marks are computed by the equi-percentile method

Admit Card Details

1. Admit card:
Admit cards for the written examination are issued online to candidates with a valid application by the closing date; information is given through newspapers and the Commission's website, and by SMS and e-mail

Reservation Details

1. Women:
35 per cent horizontal reservation in every reservation category, on the 97 per cent of posts left after the 3 per cent reserved for women of the Backward Classes; admissible only to women who are original residents of Bihar. Women may also be appointed on merit over and above the 35 per cent
2. Grandchildren of freedom fighters:
2 per cent horizontal reservation - 03 posts - for the grandchildren of freedom fighters of Bihar whose pension is sanctioned by the central government
3. Economically Weaker Section:
Certificate must be based on income and assets of financial year 2025-2026 and is valid for one year from the date of issue; for a married, divorced or deserted woman it is valid only if issued on the basis of General Administration Department letter no. 5622 dated 24.03.2026
4. Domicile:
Every kind of reservation, including the 35 per cent for women, is available only to original residents of Bihar; candidates in a reserved category of another state must apply as unreserved, failing which they are held ineligible

Disqualification Criteria

1. Grounds of cancellation of candidature:
Entering a wrong reservation category or claiming reservation while belonging to the unreserved category; information found wrong at document verification; involvement in a criminal act or activity; cheating or impersonation in the written or physical test; inducing or threatening examination staff; any other circumstance against the terms of the advertisement or against the malpractice-free conduct of the examination
