UPSC will conduct Engineering Services Examination, 2027 to recruit engineers for Group A/B services across multiple central ministries/departments in four disciplines: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics & Telecommunication. Selection is through a three-stage process: Stage-I Preliminary (objective) of 500 marks, Stage-II Main (conventional) of 600 marks, and Stage-III Personality Test/Interview of 200 marks. Exam Pattern
- 1. Stages:
- Stage-I Preliminary (objective, 500 marks), Stage-II Main (conventional, 600 marks), Stage-III Personality Test/Interview (200 marks). Final ranking is based on total of all three stages.

- General Studies & Engineering Aptitude; 2 hours; 200 marks (common to all).
- 3. Prelims Paper-II:
- Discipline paper (Civil/Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics & Telecommunication); 3 hours; 300 marks.
- 4. Mains:
- Two conventional papers in the chosen Engineering discipline; 3 hours each; 300 marks each (total 600).
- 5. Negative marking:
- In objective papers, 1/3rd of the marks assigned to a question will be deducted for each wrong answer.
- 6. Calculator rule:
- Battery-operated pocket calculators permitted only in Main (conventional) papers; not allowed in Preliminary (objective) papers.
- 7. OMR instructions:
- Use black ball pen only; errors/omissions in encoding Roll No. and Test Booklet Series on OMR may lead to rejection.

Selection Process
- 1. Prelims qualification:
- Candidates securing minimum qualifying marks in both Paper-I and Paper-II of Preliminary will be shortlisted for Main Examination; about six to seven times the total vacancies will be admitted to Main.
- 2. Interview shortlisting:
- Candidates qualifying Preliminary and Main with minimum qualifying marks as fixed by the Commission shall be called for Personality Test/Interview; about twice the number of vacancies will be summoned.
- 3. Merit:
- Final merit is based on marks of Preliminary, Main and Personality Test/Interview combined.
Admit Card Details
- 1. Issue timeline:
- e-Admit Card will be issued on the last working day of the preceding week of the exam date; for approved scribe change cases, 3 days prior. Download from https://upsconline.nic.in.
- 2. Communication:
- No Admit Card by post. Keep a valid & active eMail ID; contact Facilitation Counter (011-24041001 / 011-40303444) if e-Admit Card not received one week before exam.
Reservation Details
- 1. Categories covered:
- Reservations for SC/ST/OBC/EWS and PwBD as per Government of India rules.
- 2. PwBD total & breakup:
- Total PwBD vacancies: 19 (11 Locomotor Disability including Leprosy cured, Dwarfism, Acid Attack victims and Muscular Dystrophy; 06 Hard of Hearing; 01 Low Vision; 01 Specific Learning Disability and Multiple Disability).
- 3. PwBD advisory:
- Persons with Benchmark Disabilities in the Category of Blindness are advised not to apply as no vacancies are earmarked/identified for them for the Services/Posts included in ESE 2027. Low Vision candidates should apply only to eligible posts/services per Annexure-I.
- 4. Certificate timelines:
- EWS certificate based on FY 2025-26 issued on/after 01.04.2026 and before 06.10.2026; OBC (NCL) certificate based on FYs 2025-26, 2024-25, 2023-24 issued on/after 01.04.2026 and before 06.10.2026.

Important Instructions
- 1. Electronics banned:
- Mobile phones, smart watches, AI-enabled glasses, Bluetooth devices, cameras, storage media etc. are strictly prohibited inside the examination premises; no safekeeping available.
- 2. Reporting time:
- Entry closes 30 minutes prior to commencement of each session; no entry after closure.
- 3. Face authentication:
- Mandatory face authentication/identity verification at exam venue—arrive well in time.
- 4. OMR pen colour:
- Use black ball pen only for writing and marking in OMR sheets; pencil/ink pen not permitted.
- 5. Negative marking:
- Penalty of 1/3rd marks for each wrong answer in objective papers.
- 6. Calculators:

Disqualification Criteria
- 1. Unfair means & misconduct:
- Impersonation, procuring impersonation, submitting fabricated/incorrect documents, uploading irrelevant/incorrect photo/signature, copying, use/possession of prohibited devices, influencing examiners, misbehaviour, or any violation of instructions shall lead to disqualification/debarment and possible action under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024.

- Centres have capacity ceilings (except Chennai, Dispur, Kolkata and Nagpur); allocation is first-apply-first-allot—apply early to get preferred centre.
Exam Pattern
- 1. Stages:
- Stage-I Preliminary (objective, 500 marks), Stage-II Main (conventional, 600 marks), Stage-III Personality Test/Interview (200 marks). Final ranking is based on total of all three stages.
- 2. Prelims Paper-I:
- General Studies & Engineering Aptitude; 2 hours; 200 marks (common to all).
- 3. Prelims Paper-II:
- Discipline paper (Civil/Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics & Telecommunication); 3 hours; 300 marks.
- 4. Mains:
- Two conventional papers in the chosen Engineering discipline; 3 hours each; 300 marks each (total 600).
- 5. Negative marking:
- In objective papers, 1/3rd of the marks assigned to a question will be deducted for each wrong answer.
- 6. Calculator rule:
- Battery-operated pocket calculators permitted only in Main (conventional) papers; not allowed in Preliminary (objective) papers.
- 7. OMR instructions:
- Use black ball pen only; errors/omissions in encoding Roll No. and Test Booklet Series on OMR may lead to rejection.

Selection Process
- 1. Prelims qualification:
- Candidates securing minimum qualifying marks in both Paper-I and Paper-II of Preliminary will be shortlisted for Main Examination; about six to seven times the total vacancies will be admitted to Main.
- 2. Interview shortlisting:
- Candidates qualifying Preliminary and Main with minimum qualifying marks as fixed by the Commission shall be called for Personality Test/Interview; about twice the number of vacancies will be summoned.
- 3. Merit:
- Final merit is based on marks of Preliminary, Main and Personality Test/Interview combined.
Admit Card Details
- 1. Issue timeline:
- e-Admit Card will be issued on the last working day of the preceding week of the exam date; for approved scribe change cases, 3 days prior. Download from https://upsconline.nic.in.
- 2. Communication:
- No Admit Card by post. Keep a valid & active eMail ID; contact Facilitation Counter (011-24041001 / 011-40303444) if e-Admit Card not received one week before exam.
Reservation Details
- 1. Categories covered:
- Reservations for SC/ST/OBC/EWS and PwBD as per Government of India rules.
- 2. PwBD total & breakup:
- Total PwBD vacancies: 19 (11 Locomotor Disability including Leprosy cured, Dwarfism, Acid Attack victims and Muscular Dystrophy; 06 Hard of Hearing; 01 Low Vision; 01 Specific Learning Disability and Multiple Disability).
- 3. PwBD advisory:
- Persons with Benchmark Disabilities in the Category of Blindness are advised not to apply as no vacancies are earmarked/identified for them for the Services/Posts included in ESE 2027. Low Vision candidates should apply only to eligible posts/services per Annexure-I.
- 4. Certificate timelines:
- EWS certificate based on FY 2025-26 issued on/after 01.04.2026 and before 06.10.2026; OBC (NCL) certificate based on FYs 2025-26, 2024-25, 2023-24 issued on/after 01.04.2026 and before 06.10.2026.
Document Requirements
- 1. Documents for URN & CAF:
- Certificate of age; certificate of educational qualification; category certificates for SC/ST/OBC/EWS; certificate for age/fee concession; PwBD certificate where applicable.
- 2. Photo ID:
- Aadhaar Card/Voter Card (EPIC)/PAN Card/Passport/Driving Licence/Any other Govt Photo ID; must be provided in URN profile and carried to exam.
- 3. Uploads:
- Photograph upload and live photograph capture; signature upload (three signatures in black ink on white paper) as per portal instructions.
- 4. Original verification:
- Original documents will be verified after candidates qualify for Personality Test/Interview; e-Summon letter to be generated online.
- 5. PwBD certificate format:
- Disability Certificate to be in Form V/VI/VII as applicable per MSJE Notification dated 15.06.2017 (Annexure-III).
Important Instructions
- 1. Electronics banned:
- Mobile phones, smart watches, AI-enabled glasses, Bluetooth devices, cameras, storage media etc. are strictly prohibited inside the examination premises; no safekeeping available.
- 2. Reporting time:
- Entry closes 30 minutes prior to commencement of each session; no entry after closure.
- 3. Face authentication:
- Mandatory face authentication/identity verification at exam venue—arrive well in time.
- 4. OMR pen colour:
- Use black ball pen only for writing and marking in OMR sheets; pencil/ink pen not permitted.
- 5. Negative marking:
- Penalty of 1/3rd marks for each wrong answer in objective papers.
- 6. Calculators:
- Permitted only in Main (conventional) papers; not allowed in Preliminary (objective) papers.

Interview Details
- 1. Personality Test/Interview:
- Carries 200 marks (no minimum qualifying marks). Focus on leadership, initiative, intellectual curiosity, tact, social qualities, mental and physical energy, practical application and integrity.
Disqualification Criteria
- 1. Unfair means & misconduct:
- Impersonation, procuring impersonation, submitting fabricated/incorrect documents, uploading irrelevant/incorrect photo/signature, copying, use/possession of prohibited devices, influencing examiners, misbehaviour, or any violation of instructions shall lead to disqualification/debarment and possible action under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024.

- Details of non-recommended candidates who consent may be shared with registered organisations for employment opportunities after reserve list utilisation.
- 2. Rounding off & tie-breaking:
- Marks rounded off to two decimals; tie broken by higher marks in total of Engg. discipline papers + Personality Test, then in discipline papers total, then seniority by age; if tie persists, as per Commission’s discretion.
